Clean-Up Task List

May 16, 2026

GARDEN COMPOST: Ask Karyl Weber what is needed in the bins.

WEEDING: Do at beginning so we can mulch! Most cut-up weeds can go in compost.

Weeds to target (See handout with pictures): Bindweed, Creeping Charlie, invasive clematis, dandelions, Star of Bethlehem, Virginia creeper, dandelions, etc. 

  • Inside and outside front gate 

  • To the west of the west gate 

  • The Orchard (and behind the fig trees up to the garden along the west fence)

  • Perimeter of flower garden 

  • Rock garden (and under the cement bench): Note, the sophora seedlings and pods are especially abundant here

  • Pollinator garden

  • South of the composing toilet (remove English ivy around tree)

  • Remove debris from winter around all roses and remove dried leaves; Iris corms must not be covered with debris as they will rot

  • Weed and add some compost if available to new garden bed made at northwest corner

MULCH COMMON AREAS AFTER WEEDING: Ask Lisa Rubens and Area Leads

SHADE GARDEN

  • Clear the small pile of rubble north of the juniper tree

  • Do not weed in the Shade Garden

FLOWER AND HERB GARDEN: Ask Lisa Torrieri

  • Weed perimeter and obvious weeds from beds

WEST GATE/FRONT GARDEN: Ask Linda Witt 

  • Dig out lilac and plant in new bed in NW corner

  • Dig out oat grass

  • Tie up the left-over daffodil leaves to make room for new plants

PRUNING/TRIMMING​​

  • Pinch back new growth of the fall-blooming asters at the north side of the Orchard

  • Cut spent iris and chop it up for compost

  • Cut down the Redbud Tree starts along the front fence

ORCHARD: Ask Suzanne Schecter

  • Weed (daffodils, Star of Bethlehem, etc.)

  • Cut suckers on fig?

CITY HARVEST: Ask Janice Chorba and Ed Mitinger

  • Weed

BIRD BATHS: Refill water in all six bird baths (anytime you see them empty) 

MAINTENANCE PROJECTS

  • Stain lattice fence

  • Erect lattice fence if it dries

  • Attach Little Seed library sign

 

SHED: Straighten out, check supplies (contractor and garden waste bags, etc.), sweep

COMPOSTING TOILET: Sweep, clean surfaces, check supplies

GRAPE ARBOR

  • Give grape arbor/kiwi vines a haircut

  • Cut suckers on street trees

  • Weed and sweep

NEW BED IN NORTHWEST CORNER*

  • Weed

  • Add compost if there are some leftover bags still in front of garden, 

  • If lattice goes up, begin planting: lilac from front, divide lamb’s ear on main path

SWEEP PORCH: Do at the end of clean up
