The Orchard
The orchard is on the garden’s west side, from Christian Street north. Here’s what you’ll find:
-
Pawpaws (Asimina triloba): Two pawpaw trees are by the fence on the southwest corner. Ripe fruit begins to drop in late summer.
-
Nanking Cherries (Prunus tomentosa): Two bushes are between the front fence and raspberries. Berries ripen in late June.
-
Raspberries (Rubus idaeus): Red and yellow everbearing varieties are trellised north of the Nanking Cherries. They fruit in June and again from late August through frost.
-
Blackberries (Rubus fruticosus): Trellised next to raspberries, they ripen July to August.
-
Asian persimmon (Diospyros kaki): The Asian persimmon tree is between blackberries and figs. Fruit ripens in late fall.
-
Black currant (Ribes nigrum): Bushes are by the path between persimmon and figs. Currants ripen in late June. Pick when dark purple and slightly soft.
-
Figs (Ficus carica): These “Brown Turkey” figs are from the original SWQV Community Garden orchard. Figs ripen mid-August through October and should be picked once slightly soft.
How It Works
Fruit trees and berries need regular pruning and especially moisture. Gardeners are reminded to be sure to water the orchard when during your scheduled watering week.
Please Remember
-
When you pick fruit, please keep in mind that we have 60+ other gardeners.
-
Please ask before cutting woody plants.
