City Harvest

As part of the Pennsylvania Horticulture Society’s City Harvest Program, the SWQV Community Garden donates fresh produce to the residents of Courtyard Apartments at Riverview, the senior housing project on Fourth and Washington Streets, just down the street from the garden.

In recent years, SWQV Community Garden has contributed in excess of 1,000 pounds of produce to City Harvest.

How It Works

Two garden plots, located in Rows 3 and 4, are specifically dedicated to City Harvest and maintained by member volunteers. One weekday morning each week, volunteers gather to maintain the garden. Tasks are those required of any garden: preparing soil in the spring, planting, weeding, monitoring for pests, harvesting, and putting the garden to bed at season’s end.

In addition, all member gardeners are invited to contribute excess produce to the project. To indicate that you'd like to donate, just put one of the pink flags next to the plant ready for harvesting. (Flags are located in the gazebo at the center of the garden or at the edge of the plot itself.)

How to Help

Volunteers meet every Wednesday morning to tend the garden and harvest produce.

Members interested in volunteering to help with City Harvest should contact Janice Chorba at mitchor@verizon.net or Ed Mitinger at edmitinger@verizon.net.
