Vacation Watering System

The Vacation Watering System is for anyone who would like to have their garden watered while on vacation—in return for putting in roughly the same amount of time watering for others. The directions and helpful hints below should give you an idea if this is the system for you. 

 

Anyone who posts a vacation and receives watering and neglects to sign up for roughly the same amount of time by the end of the growing season will not be invited to use the system next season. 

 

Use the Google Sheet linked here to post your vacation and/or claim a posted vacation.

How It Works

• Going away? Fill out your name, plot number, dates, and any special instructions in the first 4 columns.

• Watering a plot? Look at the list, find a vacation that matches your availability, and type your name in the Claimed By column.

• The row will automatically turn green once someone claims it, so users can easily see who still needs coverage.

 

Helpful Hints

• If you are watering someone’s plot, please check it as frequently as the weather necessitates and water as needed. That may be daily in hot weather, a few times a week in cool weather, or just once a week in a rainy period.   

• There’s no need to claim a vacation the same time you post one, or vice versa. Simply aim to cover roughly the number of days you receive yourself by the end of the growing season.

• If you are going on a longer vacation, it may be helpful to break your time up into two entries to make it easier for people to commit to watering.

• This is a live sheet, so if you happen to accidentally delete someone else’s posted information, simply use the undo arrow to the left on the toolbar.

• Keep Special Instructions to a minimum and limit to things that will be helpful to the gardener watering—plot boundaries, if unclear, for example, or location of seedlings that may need more water.
